Pelvic plastic surgery is a collection of procedures and surgeries that treat pelvic organ prolapse (POP). POP occurs when the muscles weaken and cause organs within the pelvis to drop, or prolapse, out of their original position. It is rarely life-threatening, but can be annoying and impede women’s quality of life. Common symptoms include pelvic pain or discomfort, sexual dysfunction and urinary incontinence (unintended urine leakage). 골반필러
A urogynecologist can perform a wide variety of pelvic plastic surgery to repair prolapsed organs and restore normal support structures of the vagina and uterus. These surgical techniques can be either open or minimally invasive.
Most of these procedures can be performed through a cut in the vagina or through small incisions in your abdomen (laparoscopic or robotic-assisted). This approach may reduce your pain, blood loss and hospital stay.
Pelvic reconstruction surgeries can be used to repair problems caused by pregnancy, childbirth or hysterectomy. They are also used to repair damage from injuries, infections and diseases such as diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis. In addition, these surgeries can improve symptoms of vulva aging such as laxity and loss of tone in the vulva and vaginal lips and folds.
A common surgery is colporrhaphy, which repairs tears in the anterior or posterior vaginal walls and helps to support the cervix and bladder. It can be done through a cut in the vagina or, more commonly, with a mesh bridge or graft through the abdominal wall. Another surgical procedure is a hysteropexy, which re-suspends the uterus (and sometimes the cervix) to the pelvic ligaments or sacrum with a mesh bridge or graft.
Other procedures can help reduce urinary incontinence, including stress incontinence, which causes unintended urine leakage during physical activity such as coughing, sneezing, running or heavy lifting. In addition, a surgery called a labiaplasty can decrease the size of the outer skin folds (labia minora and majora) when they are enlarged for reasons such as childbirth or aging.
In addition to these procedures, some urogynecologists offer pelvic mesh removal surgery to address complications associated with synthetic or biologic mesh that was previously used for POP repair. These complications can include a ring-like bulge through the vaginal walls, pelvic pain and pain during sex.
Mesh-related complications have been linked to a higher rate of pelvic floor problems and can be prevented or treated by following guidelines for care.
The best way to prevent or reduce the risk of prolapse is to practice Kegel exercises, which strengthen the pelvic muscles and can help support the rectum and bladder. It is important to talk with your gynecologist about these and other pelvic health issues. He or she can tell you more about your specific risks, what to expect during and after surgery and which surgical approach might be most appropriate for you.
